A NEW VINEYARD BECOMES PART OF THE SANDRONE FAMILY'S HERITAGE

BAROLO | They met, got closer and liked each other. To then reunite and choose each other. That is the story of Luciano Sandrone and Le COSTE DI MONFORTE, a vineyard and its grapes he discovered more than twenty years ago. It is a story of friendship and of wine art, which led the Sandrone family to buy that small plot of land in 2021.

“We met with Le Coste di Monforte and its wines for the first time in the year 2000, when the owner asked us to take care of the winemaking and the maturation. At the time, we had already noticed how special those grapes were. Today we are proud of the fact that Le Coste di Monforte is part of our heritage and that it will permit us to complete the project of LE VIGNE. It was like a passing of the baton in the sign of friendship, with the aim to take care of the vines, without ever exploiting them,” says Luciano Sandrone.

Le Coste di Monforte characterizes itself through its wise vines, which carry an excellent genetic heritage. The plot, which measures 1.92 hectares, also benefits from the perfect natural balance between exposition and altitude. In fact, the vines are oriented in a south-southeast direction and their altitude increases the quality of the grapes. Despite bordering on the limits of the Nebbiolo cultivation area, the vines of Sandrone’s Le Coste di Monforte, the highest of the whole family heritage situated at 410 meters above sea level, are simultaneously protected from the cold and shielded from the summer heat. Thus, they are ready to face ever more unpredictable climate conditions.

With the vintage of 2019 onwards, Le Coste di Monforte in Monforte d’Alba joined with Vignane in Barolo, Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto and Cerviano-Merli in Novello. Together, they will form LE VIGNE, the Barolo blend by the Sandrone family, a wine, whose very name is indicative of Luciano’s choice to celebrate each vineyard. Indeed, the blend is the expression of each plot, whose grapes are harvested, vinified, and matured separately.

Within LE VIGNE, Le Coste di Monforte will be able to contribute potency, force and freshness.

“The Barolo LE VIGNE speaks for the entire territory of Barolo, giving key importance to the vineyards. The five vineyards which have shaped it since the vintage of 2019 are unique, differing in orientation, position, genetic heritage and altitude, but each is special in shaping LE VIGNE”, Luciano continues.

THE HUMILITY OF THE WINEMAKER.
THE RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY.

We are pleased to announce the first release of Vite Talin, the new Barolo from the Sandrone family, in which the grape shines more brightly than the terroir.

BAROLO – It took 25 years of experiments, trials and valuations. In 2019, after 6 years of ageing, the first bottle of 2013 Barolo Vite Talin will be released. This is a wine destined to be as imagined by Luciano all those years ago.

A combination of enthusiasm, curiosity, stubbornness and dedication. The history of Vite Talin is wrapped up between Luciano Sandrone, who in 1987 was a young, curious and ambitious winemaker of great potential, and the trust of an old grower, Natale Ronanza, nicknamed "Talin," who agreed to rent his vineyard in Le Coste di Barolo to Luciano.

And it was in this very piece of land that Luciano, working in the vines, noticed a plant of particular and unique character: sparse and scraggly bunches with smaller-than-normal berries, of a deep blue color, vegetation of decidedly less vigor and jagged, thick leaves. Instead of uprooting the plant, Luciano noted its position so as to observe it carefully and each subsequent year it exhibited the same characteristics.

Luciano then entered into an experimental phase: micro-vinifications confirm good color, excellent tannins and balanced alcohol. From the late 1980's to the early 1990's, the plant is reproduced by field-grafting that confirms the plant's unique set of characteristics as repeatable from site to site and continued experiments in the winery show results well above the average. Luciano also began a collaboration with Prof. Anna Schneider, an ampelographer at the National Research Institute for the Improvement of the Vine at the University in Torino.

Luciano Sandrone: "This wine expresses the result of a path taken to protect and cherish that which Mother Nature has given us. It could not have been other than Vite Talin: "vite" in honor of the single unique plant and "Talin" to honor the elder farmer who showed great faith in my potential all those years ago and believed in my ability to astonish him. I gathered the fruit of the earth, and I cultivated an opportunity. Nebbiolo is my life and my life's work."

Only in 2017, thanks to DNA analysis, was it conclusively determined that the vine was Nebbiolo of the highest qualitative characteristics. For this plant, with its unique characteristics, and for this future Barolo, the path was now clear, after 25 years of work. The vintage 2013, after 3 years in tonneaux and then botte, and a further 3 years of refinement in bottle, has continued its steady evolution. Today, in 2019, Vite Talin is finally ready.

VITE TALIN, the Birth of a Barolo.

The wine is vinified in a large open-topped wooden vat, then matured two years in tonneaux of French oak followed by a year in large casks before being held in bottle for an additional 3 years. Vite Talin is a precious, rich wine, suited to long cellaring, with an intense and impeccable garnet-red colour, of varied and full aromatics which at the moment are predominantly floral and fruity, and with hints of emerging spice notes. The wine is structured and powerful with significant tannins, which promise great potential for long cellaring.

The label also highlights the specific and unique character of Vite Talin: a wine in which the grape's unique character is more intense than the terroir.

• Barolo DOCG
• Nebbiolo 100%
• Complete destemming
• Warm pre-fermentation maceration under anaerobic conditions
• Indigenous yeasts only
• Fermentation in 50hl upright wooden casks
• 20-25 days of total maceration, depending on the vintage's specifics, with use of submerged cap when merited
• After the maceration, the first racking is to separate the wine from the grape solids. The wine is racked to steel for 1 week for the rough lees to settle out
• Then, the wine is racked to French oak tonneaux – 500L – for malolactic fermentation and 2 years of ageing
• Over 50% of the tonneaux are new, as the wine's tannin structure requires more new wood
• Racked to large oval casks of French Oak of for 1 year of refinement
• Bottled after 3 years total in wood
• Held in bottle for 3 years before potential release

SANDRONE - EXPERIENCE, REASONING AND HEART

50+ harvests, more than 40 years of wine making, 3 varietals: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. 2 territories together as Langa and Roero tell the story of our 6 red wines, which are expressions of our intuitions, careful observations and critical thinking.

We have always been driven by a single overriding and thriving ambition: to discover new nuances in each harvest. Revealing them in our wines is what we want and love to do! Each harvest has its own harmony, and each wine is a story in itself.

40 ANNI SANDRONE

Barolo, Italy - after more than 50 harvests, Luciano Sandrone, who began as a vintner making his signature wines in his family's home garage, is celebrating his 40th anniversary. Until today he has concentrated himself on Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, 3 autochthonous varietals in the two distinct wine regions of Langa and Roero, both of which are close to his heart. The result of his intuition, talent and skill are five internationally known red wines. The future is bright for Luciano: his grandchildren Alessia, Stefano and his nephew Giacomo are gradually taking on more and more responsibilities in the winery, while the Family all together is ready to proudly announce a bold project for 2019.

Luciano's overarching goal has been to reveal the finest and most subtle nuances while avoiding any hint of uniformity (one could call it "sameness") in his wines. Not the least of his work is his love of bringing to life the finest differences from vintage to vintage. In the 1970's, Luciano chose a clear path: one of uncompromising quality above all else. The focus on only local varieties grown in the best sites became a fundamental part of the Sandrone philosophy - and is today as it was once.

The story began at the family's home where Luciano made his first wines in the garage. Since then, passion, tireless effort and attention to detail have defined his work ethic. Luciano, who inherited no land or vineyards from his family, was able to purchase his first vineyard plot in Cannubi Boschis in 1977 - a hill known as a cradle of Barolo. In 1978, with his wife Mariuccia at his side, he decided to dedicate his life to making his own wine. A chance encounter at Vinitaly 1981 with an important American wine buyer changed his life - the buyer purchased all 1500 bottles Luciano made of his now-legendary 1978. Successes followed, and in 1985 he adopted his then-radical label, still in use today, with the name Sandrone in gold letters on a cobalt blue background. This bold graphic stroke - since used for all his labels - heralded the beginning of an important range of wines which was soon to follow.

The 1989 and 1990 vintages brought Luciano great success and notice by wine journalists the world over.
After their studies, both his brother Luca and is daughter Barbara joined the growing winery after experiences both locally and internationally. Both are intimately involved with the day-to-day operations of the winery and share Luciano's boundless passion for quality. n 1994, the team brought the Valmaggiore project to life with the first bottling from this historic and incredibly steep vineyard.

1999 brought another milestone for the family: the completion of the new winery in just one year of construction, on the valley floor facing the original vineyard of Cannubi Boschis. Respect for the land is a value deeply rooted in all the members of the Sandrone Family, which receives their greatest respect, especially for its unique, site-specific qualities. The family's greatest challenge is the constant attention required to create a unique and unmistakable wine year in, year out. Their constant efforts to achieve this goal have made all the difference.

This effort also manifests itself in the "sibi et paucis" project, launched in 2004. The family decided to hold back a small portion of the 3 Nebbiolo-based wines - Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba, Le Vigne Barolo and Cannubi Boschis Barolo - in a specially constructed cellar under perfect ageing conditions. Here the wines rest: 6 years for the Valmaggiore and 10 years for the two Barolo. In Luciano's personal wine library, the bottles find the perfect conditions for ageing, improvement and constant, slow refinement. The bottles are labeled with a special "sibi et paucis" seal on the labels when they are eventually released from the winery's cellars.
2017 brought ALESTE, the natural continuity of Luciano's first wine, the Barolo Cannubi Boschis. Giving all the experience, knowledge, patience and passion of his many harvests, Luciano pays tribute, with boldness and sensibility, to the next family generation: "ALESTE" is in fact the combination of the names of his grandchildren ALEssia and STEfano, Barbara's children.

Today the Sandrone winery farms 27 hectares of vineyards between the regions of Langa and Roero. Luciano looks forward to the next 40 years with great tranquillity and satisfaction, knowing that his creation, his winery, is fully supported by the new generations who gradually take over more and more and 2019 will bring a new surprise, as Luciano has been working adding a new bottling to his Barolo Family.
