Our Danish importer Hendrik Madsen of Nebbio.com is hosting a vertical tasting of the Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore with full dinner on May 21 at the restaurant Enomania in Copenhagen. Hendrik will be pouring 8 vintages of the Valmaggiore including the 1999 and 1998 from magnum.
Valmaggiore is one of our most important projects that illustrates the variety of expression that the Nebbiolo grape is capable of in differing soil, terroir and climactic conditions. It is a magical place that is very dear to Luciano's heart (and indeed, all of ours). The Valmaggiore is an incredibly steep hill in the shape of a perfect south-facing bowl, located just outside the Barolo zone in the Roero (north of the River Tanaro). Our Valmaggiore bottling displays beautiful aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries, rose petals, pomegranate and anise, framed by complex mineral notes with balanced acidity and tannins. In weight it is comparable to a Premier Cru Burgundy and is a versatile and delicious wine with varied cuisines.
For reservations and information, contact Henrdik at +45.22.24.93.20 (cellular). The price is 750 kr per person.

94: Luciano Sandrone - LE VIGNE Barolo 2006
AL - Dark, ruby with a tawny rim; the nose is intense, displaying a great deal of purity, some earthy notes of liquorice and ginger, wild berries and a floral touch; well structured palate, dense fruit, plenty of extract and tannin, mouth coating and long finish - still with great potential; elegant wine. 94
MdM - Intense, garnet red colour with brick red hue. Quite closed character on the nose with a hint of balmy aromas. On the palate well structured with good weight and length; however, slightly dry on the tannins in the finish. 94

AL - Medium to deep, tawny colour; the nose of sweet and perfumed with notes of stewed fruit, flower, chocolate praline and fine spices; the palate has good grip and structure; rather full with elegant fruit, marked, but ripe tannin, fresh, complex and long finish. 92
MdM - Dark, garnet red colour with brick red hue. Very dense, aromatic profile with dried prunes and cherries. A hint of minerality in the background. On the palate good weight and length, a hint of acidity, discreet balmy notes. 92

La Stampa Newspaper featured the Sandrone Cantina in an article about the OperaWine "100 Greatest Producers" event in Verona on the 6 April. We are pleased to have been mentioned by name among this group of excellent wine producers.
On May 27, La Stampa followed up with a discussion of the state of the Italian wine industry, which is among the few bright spots in an otherwise dreary economic situation ("bright" in the relative sense - it is still a very difficult situation, but better than many).

Best of Luck to our Good Friend Antonio Galloni

Longtime Italian wine critic for the Wine Advocate Antonio Galloni announced today in the New York Times that he we will be leaving the Wine Advocate to pursue hsi own wine business at www.antoniogalloni.com
We wish him best of luck in his new endeavors and all good fortune for him and his family.
Today's interview from the New York Times "Diner's Journal" by Eric Asimov:
Antonio Galloni, a leading wine reviewer for Robert M. Parker Jr.’s The Wine Advocate, one of the world’s most influential wine guides, will depart the publication to start his own wine enterprise, which he said would begin to roll out on the Internet in March.
In an interview Tuesday, Mr. Galloni, 42, said his new Web site, antoniogalloni.com, would be aimed at younger wine consumers, using new technologies and different forms of media than The Wine Advocate, which, though it has a solid Web presence, still retains the flavor of print media.
“My motivation has always been, how do you bring people closer to wine, how do you make stories tangible?’’ he said. “I want to use multimedia to bring those wines off the page directly to an audience. I think there’s a huge opportunity to engage people through media and technology. What’s difficult about wine is how complex a subject it is, and with technology, you can reach people in a great variety of ways.’’
The Wine Advocate, with Mr. Parker at the helm, has been one of the most powerful voices in wine for almost 30 years. But in the last decade, Mr. Parker has been delegating more and more reviewing authority to other critics. In 2006, he hired Mr. Galloni, who since 2004 had published his own wine publication, The Piedmont Report. At first, Mr. Galloni covered only Italy, but more recently took on Burgundy, Champagne and California as well.
In December, Mr. Parker sold a stake in The Advocate to a Singapore investor and announced that he was stepping down as editor in chief in favor of another Advocate reviewer, Lisa Perotti-Brown, who would be based in Singapore.
Mr. Galloni said that he had been considering the move for several years but that it began to crystallize last June, when, at the Food and Wine Classic held in Aspen, Colo., he ate at a wine-oriented restaurant and was struck by how few people were drinking wine. It occurred to him that consumers were simply overwhelmed by the number of wine choices.
“It was so stark, you should have seen people with great wines, and instead you saw them deferring to beer,’’ he recalled. “I have this vision of going to a restaurant and seeing a bottle of wine on every table. Everything I want to do is centered on how do I make that happen, how can I help people make these choices.’’
He said his new venture would try to approach wine differently than The Advocate, which is based on the print model of issuing thousands of wine reviews every other month.
“I want to disseminate information in a continual flow rather than in big, massive articles that are too massive for people to digest,’’ he said.
Mr. Galloni said the recent sale of The Advocate had also played a role in his decision. When he was hired by Mr. Parker, he said, it was with the understanding that he would operate independently under the rubric of The Advocate, an arrangement he said worked perfectly with Mr. Parker as editor in chief.
“It’s obviously clear that was going to change,’’ Mr. Galloni said. “I talked to Lisa, and it was clear that the best way for me to guarantee the highest level of independence and quality was to run my own business.’’
Mr. Galloni said he was still in the process of putting together a team of investors for his venture, which he said would rest on a foundation of wine reviews but would also employ video and Internet technology to reach more people. He said that he retained the rights to his work at The Advocate, giving new subscribers access to it, and that his coverage would expand beyond Italy, Burgundy, Champagne and California as he added staff members. -Eric Asimov (c)2013 New York Times

The annual "Slow Wine" Guide, which is based in the nearby village of Pollenzo (next to Bra, where the Slow Food movement was founded in 1986 by Carolo Petrini), has just released their 2013 edition. In contrast to almost every other wine guide published in the world, the Slow Wine guide does NOT score wines, it only "recommends."
We are very pleased that our following wines have been recommended:
Barbera d'Alba 2010 Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba 2010 Barolo Le Vigne 2008 Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2008
Slow Wine is headquartered on the campus of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in nearby Pollenzo. You can visit the Banca del Vino if you are in the area.

The Corriere della Sera and Il Messagero newspapers report that Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is interested in purchasing the Castello di Lavezzole, located about midway between Canale and Asti. We'd like to welcome our future neighbor to the area, and look forward to him getting to know the Langa.
The Castello is a restored former convent in the tiny hamlet of Lavezzole near San Damiano d'Asti, situated among rolling hills.
