The year 2010, as in the previous year, was marked by heavy precipitation in winter and spring. The seasonal pattern was in the normal range and never too hot, which fostered a long growing season with a slightly late maturation. More essential than ever, green pruning and thinning were absolutely necessary during this vintage to achieve excellent results.
Harvest
October 9-20
Vinification
Each day's picking was vinified separately. After destemming and light crushing, must is "sealed" with CO2 for gentle warm maceration of approximately a day. Alcoholic fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later from native wild yeasts only.
Maceration: Soft, lasting 7-9 days in steel.
Malo-lactic Fermentation: In used French oak tonneaux of 500 liters, immediately following the alcoholic fermentation. No new casks are ever used for this wine to preserve the delicay and elegance of the wine.
Alcoholic Fermentation: 20 days in steel
Aging: 12 months in the same tonneaux of 500 liters used for the malolactic fermentation. After bottling, it is held for 9 months in bottle before release.
Blending: Immediately before bottling in December 2011. All lots are tasted and tested for excellence before being combined and left to integrate before bottling.

May 5, 2012: Lovely medium garnet red color, which reminds us of the exceptional 2006 and 2009. In the nose and the palate, a harmonious blend of red fruits, cassis, pomegranate and rose petals. It has good structure in the mouth where a nice minerality emerges in the midpalate, followed by a long, smooth, sweet finish. The wine possesses length and elegance and will require some patience to reach its peak. This is an elegant style of Nebbiolo that illustrates the huge potential of wines from the Roero region.

Wine Advocate: 92 points, Issue 203 October 2012. The 2010 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is surprisingly shut down today. The Valmaggiore is often open and accessible when young, but that is far from the case with the 2010. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame red cherries, sweet herbs, menthol and spices in this surprisingly large-scaled, broad Valmaggiore. Layers of fruit continue to build to the vibrant, layered finish. Readers will have to be patient here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. (Antonio Galloni)
Gambero Rosso: Due Bicchieri. 2013 Guide
AIS/Bibenda: 4 Grappoli. 2013 Guide Molto elegante, dal taglio floreale e fruttato. A note di viola e rosa si affiancano glicine, cera, cigliega, lampone, fini spezie. Al gusto non mancano sostanza e vigore, con lunghezza e tannin di livello.
Veronelli: 3 stelle (90 punti). 2013 Guide
L'Espresso: 14.5/20. 2013 Guide
Slow Wine: Recommended, 2013 Guide (Slow Wine does not award numerical scores)
