Thanks to Jancis Robinson for her review of our 2009 Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba. While we wish we had gotten a better write-up, we always accept honest criticism, whether positive or negative.
"High acid, firm tannins, austere, almost skeletal character. Plenty of tar - lacking the roses. A toughie. (RH)" 17/20
We are happy the the overall quality of the wine was confirmed with the very good score of 17. Give it a few years to settle and we believe it will be lovely.

Wine Advocate critic for Italy Antonio Galloni was intervied by La Stampa on the occasion of VinItaly 2012 and singled out a few Piedmontese producers by name for praise. We are very honored to be included in this group! A translation of an excerpt of the interview:
La Stampa: You awarded the 2004 Giacomo Conterno Monfortino the maximum points possible: can we also talk about established and historic producers that are not qualitatively declining, but rather continue to improve?
Antonio Galloni: Let’s remember that Roberto Conterno is one of Italy’s most intelligent producers. He learned to give his wines fineness and elegance from his father and to maintain a style that is unquestionably Piedmontese. The stress of managing such an important estate must be considerable, but the results speak for themselves. I am also very pleased by the rebirth of the Cantina Bartolo Mascarello. Under the guidance of Maria-Theresa Mascarello, this producer, so beloved of collectors and fans alike, is making the best wines of its storied history. I am also happy to see the acknowledgement of producers such as Giuseppe Rinaldi and Giuseppe Mascarello, who were ignored for years in the Italian wine press while being sought out by collectors. I cannot fail to mention Luciano Sandrone and Angelo Gaja, whose wines blew away a room full of New York collectors recently (with the 1997 Cannubi Boschis and the 1997 Sperss, respectively, served after 1986 Margaux and 2000 Cheval Blanc). Sandrone and Gaja together show us that Italian wines have nothing to fear (from their French competitors). Many thanks to Antonio for his support! pdf of the full article below (in Italian).

We're very pleased with the recent publication of the Wine Spectator that gave 94 points to both our Barolo for the 2007 vintage. As always, many many thanks to Bruce Sanderson for his support and criticism.
2007 Barolo Le Vigne: 94 points Aromatic, with floral, red berry and spice notes, joined by a hint of tar and tobacco as this plays out on the finish. Elegant overall, as chewy tannins provide support. The finish turns savory, with a mineral accent. Best from 2014 through 2028. 150 cases imported.
2007 Barolo Cannubi Boschis: 94 points A lush texture frames blackberry, plum and spice flavors, upheld by the dense, steely structure. Well-proportioned, this needs time for the sweet fruit and structure to harmonize. Very long, with a core of cherry lingering. Best from 2016 through 2035.

Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate will be presenting Sandrone wines in one of two seminars at the Aspen Food and Wine Classic in Colorado this summer. The first, "Piedmont Beyond Barolo" features value wines from Piedmont outside the well-known zones of Barolo and Barbaresco. The second will be a special reserve tasting called "Barolo: The Verticals" and will feature Barolo from 2007, 2004 and 1999 from Sandrone, Cavallotto, Elio Grasso and Vietti. This will be an exciting opportunity to educate your palate on how Barolo develops in the bottle from 3 great and very different vintages. The 4 producers featured in this tasting run the spectrum from modern to traditional and we are honored to be included.
More information at the Wine Seminars schedule on the Classic Website.
The Aspen Food and Wine Classic will be held from June 15-17 in Aspen, Colorado. Congratulations to Food and Wine Magazine for the 30th celebration of great food and wine!

a trio of extraordinary 1997s from Piemonte
Last night I was privileged to attend the annual charity dinner to benefit The Mt. Sinai Hospital. There were a number of fabulous wines served that I will write up in detail in an HG, but three in particular blew me away. For some perspective, these 1997s were served after the 1996 Salon and Krug, 2000 Cheval Blanc, 1986 Margaux and assorted other bottles.
For the main course, our host served the 1997 Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis and 1997 Gaja Sperss. I brought along the 1997 Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia. The 1997 Sandrone was insanely beautiful, rich, powerful and seductive. This was by far the best bottle of this wine I have ever had. It was simply mesmerizing. Still youthful, this has another 15-20 years of drinking ahead of it ...
Now, 1997 is not a vintage I am especially crazy about, but these three wines were off the charts. They were also very, very young. In fact, I was totally surprised by how youthful they were. I happen to own all of these wines and after last night, and am very pleased about that. So, in my book:
1997 Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 99 1997 Gaja Sperss 100 1997 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 96+
